Dexter Community Education Preschool
Dexter Community Education Preschool offers two classes for 3 year olds and four classes for 4-5 year olds. Each class is limited to 16 students and is staffed by one teacher and one teacher assistant. A typical class day may consist of free play, circle time, crafts, snack and storytime. The program will provide daily activities and relationships that offer opportunities for the growth of each child in physical development (large and small muscles), social development (including self-concept), and intellectual development.
ELIGIBILITY
The State of Michigan requires a child be 5 years old by December 1 of the year he or she starts kindergarten. Our preschool follows similar criteria. A child must be 3 years old by December 1 to be eligible for the 3 year old program. A child must be 4 years old by December 1 to be eligible for the 4 year old program. Children in the 4 year old program will thus be eligible to attend kindergarten the following fall. We work with parents to get our preschoolers ready for kindergarten.
Each child must be toilet trained in order to attend our preschool; if this is a concern for you, please talk to Barb Bell, the Director, 734-424-4181.

Great Start School Readiness Program
In the past, Dexter Community Education has received a Great Start School Readiness Program from the Michigan Department of Education. The grant provides for 4 four year olds living in the Dexter school district and meeting certain criteria to receive preschool services at no expense to the parents.
Factors that are considered for selection of students include but are not limited to:
- low family income
- single parent homes
- developmental immaturity
- family difficulties
- parent's level of education
Students do not have to meet all factors. The program will include home visits by a preschool teacher, group activities and parent participation with other parents of scholarship recipients. Slots for this year's grants are currently filled. For more information please call the Director, Barbara Bell at 734-424-4181.
